  • It is a Janya raga derived from 29th Melakarta Dheerasankarabharanam
  • Moorchana:

    • Avarohaṇa : Ṡ N₃ Ṡ D₂, P M₁ P G2*, M1 R₂ S
  • Swarasthanas:
    • Apart from Shadja & Panchamam, swaras used are chatushruti rishabham, antara gandharam, shuddha madhyamam, chatushruti daivatam, Kakali Nishadam & Kaisiki nishadam.
  • Audava vakra sampoorna ragam.
  • Atana is a bhashanga raga. That is, it has two anyaswaras. They are sadharana gandharam (G2) and kaishiki nishadham (N2).
  • Prayogas like – ‘pddnns – pdnp – mpmpg,mp – ggrs’ are common in this raga.
  • Varjya ragam, in arohana g, d are varjya swaras.
